What Happens When You Add A Splash Of Port To Rye Whiskey? Templeton Midnight Rye

Templeton Midnight Rye

Templeton Midnight Rye is the result of bypassing the usual Port barrel finishing process and adding a touch of the famed Portuguese wine straight to the whiskey itself.

Whiskey and wine have a surprisingly long history of working together (ask Kathie Lee Gifford). But more seriously, the amount of whiskeys aged in wine barrels these days can be a bit staggering and rarely seems like much of innovation–don’t get us wrong, many of our favorites are in fact aged in wine casks, especially Port or Sherry barrels. Iowa-based whiskey maker Templeton, however, has taken things a step further with the launch of Templeton Midnight Rye. Utilizing American rye whiskey aged at the brand’s namesake distillery in Templeton, Iowa, their latest offering blends the classic brown spirit with a subtle touch of dark Port wine to create something completely new.

Composed of sourced straight rye whiskeys with a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley matured in virgin American Oak barrels, Templeton Midnight Rye actually blends the wine directly with the aged American Rye Whiskey. Plenty of whiskeys are finished in Port wine barrels (whether we’re talking single malt, bourbon, or rye), but this is different as the flavor isn’t extracted from the barrels, but rather from the wine itself.

“At Templeton, our relentless pursuit of pushing boundaries and fostering innovation is what propels us forward,” said Shane Fitzharris, SVP Commercial at Infinium Spirits. “The debut of Templeton Midnight Rye defines this exhilarating era of creativity. Even as we look towards a future where all our liquid originates directly from Templeton Distillery, we remain dedicated to providing endless possibilities and experimenting with new tastes and flavors. This commitment elevates the whiskey-drinking experience to new heights and embodies our passion for excellence.”

Tasting notes

On the nose, the whiskey offers aromas of dark cherries, figs, and a subtle hint of spiced orange peel. The palate balances cinnamon, clove, and a touch of dark chocolate, all harmonizing in a silky, luxurious, full-bodied texture. The lingering, warm finish echoes of dried fruits, oak, and a whisper of black pepper.

Wrapped in a purple label inspired by the midnight sky and adorned with star detailing, Templeton Midnight Rye is recommended to be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed in a cocktail. The brand recommends starting your off with the “Midnight Manhattan,” a unique twist on this classic cocktail.

Templeton Midnight Rye is priced at $39.99 per bottle and is now available nationwide.
