Clase Azul Mezcal Guerrero Celebrates Lesser-Known Region Of Mexico

Clase Azul Mezcal Guerrero

Clase Azul is celebrating the state of Guerrero with the release of a new Mezcal. The new offering is the second mezcal released by the iconic brand, which is best known for its tequilas

Clase Azul Mezcal Guerrero is made from 100 percent Agave Papalote, also known as Agave cupreata, which is specific to the Guerrero region of Mexico. The agave plant grows wild and completely natural in the mountainous region of Guerrero. It can take Papalote Agave up to 15 years to fully mature and only the finest agaves are cooked over the course of several days in a pit oven using volcanic rock and firewood from the Guamuchil tree, according to a statement from the brand.

“We celebrate the important, yet underappreciated, state of Guerrero as the inspiration for our newest family member,” said President of Clase Azul Spirits Juan Sanchez. “Rich in natural beauty, from the bay views to the mountains of Sierra Madre del Sur, the region has a deep connection to Mexican culture and tradition, making it the perfect backdrop for our Mezcal Guerrero.”

“This new member of the Clase Azul family was inspired by the singularity of Guerrero’s landscapes, gastronomy, art, and heritage –– but also by the strength and leadership of the women of this region,” adds the brand.

On the nose, the mezcal offers aromas of grapefruit skin, fresh wood, rosemary, and peanut oil, along with hints of butter and daisy flowers. The palate features fresh wood, seaweed, lemon juice, pepper, and light notes of tobacco.

It is recommended to be paired with serrano ham tapas accompanied by heirloom tomato and green olive tapenade, steamed fish tacos accompanied by cuaresmeño (jalapeño) chili and tamarind sauce, or lemon cake accompanied by ripe fruits (pear, apricots, and mango).

“The decanter pays tribute to the ancestral wisdom, tender nature, and warrior spirit of the Mexican woman––qualities that have made her the heart of Guerrero’s culture,” explains the brand. The green color represents jade. The 4-petaled flowers covering the decanter represent the Fifth Sun–a pre-Hispanic god known as the beginning of everything. The colorful cap features the figure of a hummingbird, the fabled messenger of the Gods, reaffirming its mystical and celestial connection to the region.

“Guerrero is home to delicious food, magnificent artisans, and fabled stories passed down through generations,” said Clase Azul’s founder and CEO, Arturo Lomeli. “We are honored to invite the world to discover this remarkable part of our beloved Mexico, while sharing our new mezcal.”

Bottled at 42% ABV, Clase Azul Mezcal Guerrero is priced at $249 per 750ml bottle. To purchase a bottle, head over to the Clase Azul Spirits website.

In August, Clase Azul released a new limited-edition tequila, dubbed Gold. It is a blend of tequila Clase Azul Plata and an eight-year-old extra anejo that was first aged in bourbon barrels and then finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks.
