Bubbly orange and effervescent magenta sloshing in the glow of a yellow sun, summer dresses and croquet in the park, outdoor patios and the crack of melting ice, when it comes to spritzes, summer gets all the attention. But fall might actually be the best season for a good spritz, the key is the recipe.
To make a good fall spritz it’s important to concentrate on deeper, heavier flavors, while still managing to keep that indescribable lightness that’s at the heart of its being. Even the colors of the autumn variety lean towards the season, think earthy browns and leafy reds and yellows.
Our favorite fall spritz recipes come from northwestern Italy and, to be more exact, the Province of Asti. That’s where iconic winery Giulio Cocchi Spumanti produces a variety of aperitif wines that are perfect for enjoying the crisper season. From there, it’s all about the garnishes.
Valentino Longo, the Italian Mixologist Ambassador of the Italian Trade Agency Spirits Campaign, suggests using what you may already have in your fridge or pantry as garnishes for a festive seasonal Spritz, such as rosemary, cinnamon, fresh cranberries, and pears. “In Italy, specially in northern regions, it is custom to drink “Vin Brule”, a mix of red wine infused with sugar, spices and herbs,” says Valentino. “And we can definitely use the same concept for a fantastic Spritz by utilizing spices and herbs that usually are hidden in our pantries otherwise. Don’t be scared of trying different spices or herbs and let your creativity flow!”
Nothing is quite like a crisp autumn day at dusk, after all. Add a refreshing cocktail, al bacio.
