Has Finland Released The World’s Most Sustainable Vodka?

|

A new Finnish vodka might be the world’s most sustainable spirit. Dubbed Koskenkorva Vodka Climate Action, the expression is made from regeneratively-farmed barley to help fight climate change.

Koskenkorva Vodka Climate Action was created by Nordic drinks company the Anora Group, non-profit foundation Baltic Sea Action Group, and Finnish farmer Jari Eerola. It is made using regenerative farming methods which aim to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in the ground, creating carbon sinks that reduce the impact of climate change.

“With Koskenkorva Vodka Climate Action, we are using a batch of single-estate barley that ferments a little bit differently to others, so we take a more hands-on approach in the process,” said Mikael Karttunen, the brand’s global brand ambassador.

According to Karttunen, “if all the farmers in the world swapped to regenerative farming, together we could remove up to 322 billion tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere – nearly as much as we emit globally in 10 years”.

Koskenkorva Vodka Climate Action distillery in western Finland runs mostly on bio-energy and has a 99.9% recycling rate. Even the husks of the barley left over during the distillation process are used to power the plant. It is also vegan, gluten and GMO-free.

The vodka is set to launch in the UK in October for £23 per bottle.

Earlier this week, Diageo opened Diageo Lebanon Distillery, its first carbon neutral distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky. The site will support the local community with 30 full-time jobs while also sourcing 100% non-GMO corn locally. The 72,000 square-foot facility has the capacity to produce up to 10 million proof gallons per year and has begun distilling Bulleit Bourbon using electrode boilers that are powered by 100% renewable electricity throughout the cooking, distillation, and dry house processes.
