Islay’s Port Askaig Launches 12-Year-Old Single Malt Whisky

|

Port Askaig has added a 12-Year-Old single malt to its range of Scotch whiskies. Made up of distillate from 2006 and 2007, the Islay distillery’s new bottling gives the brand a mid-range offering similar to its nearby competitors such as Lagavulin and Bowmore.

Owned by independent bottler and blender Elixir Distillers, the Port Askaig 12 Year Old Spring Edition is said to balance sweetness and smoke. Expect aromas of peated malt, zesty lemon oil and a maritime minerality, leading to flavours of lemon sherbet, key lime pie, sooty smoke and toffee-led sweetness. The finish delivers barbecued Persian black lemon and dried mint leaves, with a touch of paprika.

Priced at £65.95 ($88 USD), Port Askaig 12 Years Old Spring Edition is bottled at 45.8% ABV without caramel colouring or chill filtration. It is currently available for purchase at The Whisky Exchange.

Nestled into the north coast of the island, Port Askaig acted as the entrance to Islay for hundreds of years. Port Askaig is a range of Islay single malt whiskies that intends to bring together the robust smokiness and soft fruitiness found across the island’s offerings.

Each expression within Port Askaig’s range is bottled in limited batches. To ensure each whisky maintains its original flavour and character, the whiskies are not chill-filtered and no colouring is added.

Other offerings from Port Askaig include an 8 Year Old, a 100 Proof, a 110 Proof, a 10th Anniversary, a 25 Year Old, a 28 Year Old, and a 45 Year Old.

Elsewhere in Islay news,  Lagavulin and Caol Ila launched their Fèis Ìle 2020 whiskies: Lagavulin 20 Years Old Fèis Ìle 2020 and Caol Ila 16 Years Old Fèis Ìle 2020. Douglas Laing released a new Big Peat whisky for the Fèis Ìle festival: the Big Peat 8 Years Old A846. And Ardbeg unveiled Blaaack, a limited edition bottling released for the 2020 Feis Ile festival.
