Penderyn has introduced the first whisky in its new small batch series for America, USA Limited Release #1. The new expression from the Welsh whisky company is extremely rare with just 1,210 bottles being made.
Penderyn USA Limited Release #1 is made from single malt from four different casks (ex-bourbon barrel, an STR cask, and two from Penderyn’s sweet Portuguese wine barriques collection–Ruby Port and Carcavelos fortified wine). Master Blender Aista Phillips crafted the small batch by marrying the selection of unconventional casks to achieve new flavors.
“These small batch releases are completely distinct from anything else in our core range of premium single malt Welsh whiskies,” said Giancarlo Bianchi, Penderyn’s commercial director. “Adding a distinct touch, 25% of the batch comes from STR (Shave, Toast, Re-Char) casks, a technique that was developed by the late Dr. Jim Swan, a renowned whisky expert and distiller who was instrumental in creating Penderyn’s house style.”
The marriage of sweet Portuguese wine and ex-Bourbon casks results in a nose of apples and pears with a creaminess that incorporates caramel and raisins. The mouthfeel is initially sweet with caramel and toffee notes before evolving into a more savory flavor profile with hints of oak and spice. The finish is long and lingering, with a creamy mouthfeel and a balanced sweetness that lingers on the tongue.
Bottled at 50% ABV, Penderyn USA Limited Release #1 is only available in the U.S. through importer ImpEx Beverages of San Francisco, California and is priced at $99.99.
