Plantation Rum Unveils Extreme Collection No. 5

|

Plantation Rum has unveiled Extreme Collection No. 5, a trio of limited-edition vintage rums from the West Indies Rum Distillery. The Maison Ferrand-owned brand launched the fourth edition to the collection back in October 2020.

Plantation Rum Extreme Collection No. 5 focuses on Barbados and includes Barbados 1986, Barbados 2000, and Barbados 2007. As it turns out, the first bottling of Plantation Rum was also a Barbados 1986.

The 1986 vintage was aged for 13 years in bourbon barrels in Barbados, then for 21 years in bourbon barrels in Europe, and the finally for one year in Cognac casks. Only 286 bottles are available.

The 2000 vintage was aged for five years in bourbon barrels in Barbados, then 14 years in bourbon barrels in Europe, and then spent its final two years in Cognac casks. Just 929 bottles are available.

The 2007 vintage was aged for two years in bourbon barrels in Barbados, then for 10 years in Europe, followed by two years in Cognac casks in France. Almost 3,000 bottles are available.

Like all of the Plantation Rums, the new releases went through a double aging process. First, the rums mature in bourbon barrels in the tropics, then they cross the ocean by boat for 30 to 40 days, meant to optimize the interaction between the cane spirit and the oak wood. The final aging takes place in Cognac barrels in the continental climate of Southwest France.

Plantation Rum Extreme Collection No. 5 is set to hit shelves in August. The Barbados 2007 (58% ABV) will be priced at $200; Barbados 2000 (47.8% ABV) will cost $300; while Barbados 1986 (55.1% ABV) comes in at $1,500 per 750ml bottle. In addition to being available at select retailers, the entire collection is up for auction online until July 11th through the Rum Auctioneer. All proceeds will go to benefit Barbados Community College’s fine arts program.

Last month, Bardstown Bourbon unveiled the latest edition to its acclaimed Collaborative series, Plantation Rum Finish, a 10-year-old Tennessee Bourbon that has been finished for 22 months in Plantation Rum barrels.
