Spirit of Yorkshire Filey Bay STR Finish Whisky Debuts

Filey Bay STR Finish whisky

The Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery has released its Filey Bay STR Finish single malt Whisky. The fourth release from the English distillery is finished in Rioja wine casks.

Distilled in 2016, the “field to bottle” single malt spent years maturing in Bourbon casks before transferring to be finished in shaved, toasted and re-charred red wine barriques, which came from Rioja, Spain. STR refers to Shaving, Toasting and Re-charring the casks, which the distillery says results in a cask that delivers a really beautiful and balanced maturation.

According to the distillery, the Whisky is, “Light and floral, with layers of summer berries and vanilla ice cream, there’s a sweet and oaky spiciness that hints at a fantastic glass of Spanish red wine.”

Joe Clark, Whisky Director at Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, says, “Filey Bay STR Finish is totally different from anything we’ve released so far. It takes the citrus and caramel flavours from the bourbon casks and weaves them with the red fruits of the Rioja barriques, creating a complex whisky with spice and depth that’s also light and floral. Our STR casks held Rioja wine for around five years and after disgorging at the bodega have then gone back to the cooperage in Jerez to undergo the reconditioning process.”

Filey Bay STR Finish is priced at £60 (US$76) per 700ml bottle and is limited to just 6,000 bottles. They can be ordered from the company’s official web store come mid July, or pre-ordered now.

Before the release of the STR Finish, the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery debuted a first and second batch of its inaugural single malt, which they followed with a Moscatel cask-finished Whisky.

Elsewhere in English Whisky, Lakes Distillery debut a blended Whisky aged in orange wine casks. While the English Whisky Co. launched the world’s first 11 Year Old English Single Malt.
