Last week, thieves broke into Glenfarclas distillery and stole 20 bottles of rare whisky, according to Scottish police. The bottles are valued at approximately £150,000 ($189,425 USD).
The break-in happened in the early hours of Sunday. Two men are believed to have broken into Glenfarclas’s visor center in Speyside and made their way directly to the case containing the distillery’s most precious bottles. The whole robbery only took four minutes, according to the BBC,
The firm said it was “horrified” that valuable bottles including a 60-year-old malt were stolen, after cabinets with strengthened glass were smashed. “They obviously knew exactly what they were looking for,” the distillery’s production manager Callum Fraser told the news service. “They made their way straight to our cabinet that holds our most expensive whisky.”
The Glenfarclas 60-Year-Old is one of the world’s most expensive whiskies, regularly selling for over $22,000 per bottle.
“We are looking to trace two men in connection with the break-in,” said Detective Sergeant Graeme Skene of CID in Aberdeen. “We believe the men travelled to the area and we would appeal to hoteliers, bed and breakfast establishments and Airbnb premises to get in touch if they suspect anyone of being suspicious.
“Those responsible will be looking to sell on the alcohol. If you are offered alcohol at a discounted price, you would be wise to suspect it has been stolen. It is a criminal offence to buy stolen goods. We would appeal to anyone with any information to call Police Scotland on 101, quoting 1328 of Sunday, 15 May, 2022.”
In November, an irreplaceable bottle of 1806 Château d’Yquem was stolen, along with 44 other bottles, in the early morning hours of October 27 from Atrio restaurant and hotel in Cáceres, Spain. All together, the heist involved 45 bottles of wine that are estimated to be worth over $1.1 million.
