Wemyss Malts has unveiled its first single malt Scotch Whisky, the Untold Riches 28 Year Old. The Edinburgh-based independent bottler specializes in small-batch blended malts and also releases a number of single cask single malts each year.
The limited edition Wemyss Malts Untold Riches was crafted from 28-year-old unpated Bunnahabhain single malt, carefully selected from 31 hogshead and Sherry butt casks. The resulting Scotch has an abundance of cereal rich and dried fruit flavors, an oily, mouth coating body and a subtle saffron spice finish.
On the nose, an initial aroma of cracked leather, dusty books and antique wood reveals the decades of cask maturation, while dark fruits, maraschino cherries and orange oil all develop like a gourmet Black Forest Gateau. The palate is full bodied and smooth with demerara coated walnuts and pecans mingling with plums, dates, banana bread and stick toffee pudding sauce. Hints of salinity and mineralic notes come through as salted caramel or waxy honey. The finish features mild spice hints of saffron, clove and nutmeg. Gentle wood smoke and salted caramel lingers for many seconds.
Those paying close attention to the bottle will notice a spelling error on Bunnahabhain distillery. Wemyss has “chosen to take the more sustainable route not to reprint.”
Bottled at 49.1% ABV, Wemyss Malts Untold Riches is currently on sale for £149.95 ($206 USD) per 700ml bottle, and can be purchased via the brand’s official website. It will be made available at specialty independent spirits retailers across the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asoa come February.
In December, Wemyss launched Spice King Highland & Islay Whisky Aged 12 Years. Just 5,000 bottles of the limited edition blended Scotch will be made available. In November, Wemyss unveiled a new colorful redesign of its flagship Whisky range. The redesign features a blend of colors that were designed to reflect the flavors within each bottle.
