Woodford Reserve Five Wood Whiskey Hits Shelves

Woodford Reserve Five Wood Whiskey is officially available. The newest limited edition spirit from the Brown-Forman brand got its name from the five different barrels it was matured in over the course of its life. It’s a first for the Kentucky-based company, who continue to push innovation in the American Whiskey world.

Staring life in standard oak barrels, the Whiskey was then finished in oloroso Sherry, Amontillado Sherry, ruby Port and tawny Port barrels. The result is something unique and new for Woodford.

“This is the first time in Woodford Reserve’s history that we’ve blended whiskeys that have been finished in five different barrels,” explains Woodford Reserve master distiller Chris Morris. “The result is a rich taste and a bright finish.”

On the nose, the whiskey features, “An intense medley of rich blackberry, dark cherry, dates, raisin, prune and red fruit reduction notes sweetened with Damara sugar and caramel-coated walnuts. Dark leather, oak and black licorice spice develop slowly.” The plate has, “Rich dark chocolate and espresso coffee caramel icing coated with a raspberry and cherry reduction.” The finish finds  “Long, mouthwatering rich red fruit brightened with a drop of orange oil.”

Woodford Reserve Five Wood is part of the brand’s experimental Distillery Series, which highlights their “commitment to innovation and premium craftsmanship.” The company releases three expressions of the range per year. Past varieties have included, Double Double Oaked, Barrel Finished Rye, and Sweet Mash Redux.

Bottled at 90.4% ABV, Woodford Reserve Five Wood can only be purchased at the actual distillery for $49.99. It will also be available at select retailers across Kentucky. Find a store through the brand’s official website.

Brown-Forman also announced the release date for and details on the forthcoming 2020 Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, one of the most popular annual releases in the American Whiskey world.
