Sauvignon Blanc has grown into a varietal celebrated across the globe. From New Zealand to California to France, the white wine comes in a variety of styles and, along with rosé, is possibly the most summer-y vino. Over the years, it has gained a reputation for value, but there are still plenty of pricey bottles available. Those looking to dabble in the world’s most expensive sauvignon blancs will want to look to California and France for the most extravagant options.
Recently, Wine-Searcher released its list of The World’s Most Expensive Sauvignon Blancs and it’s filled with examples from across France. It’s a Napa Valley, California icon, however, that sits atop the list.
Screaming Eagle sits atop the outlet’s list of most expensive sauvignon blancs. While that might be a bit of a surprise to some, the brand has built an incredible reputation for its highly sought-after wines and tiny production volumes. Recently, the winery’s Cabernet Sauvignon finished second in a list of Napa Valley’s most expensive.
While California is on top, it’s France that appears most frequently throughout the top 10. Seven French wines from three different regions make appearances in the top 10. And, to no one’s surprise, it’s Sancere leading the way with four bottlings appearing in the elite section.
The other three spots in the top 10 all hail from California’s Napa Valley. Dana Estates and Lail Vineyards join Screaming Eagle Winery on the list.
Somewhat surprisingly due to its global reputation for producing the white wine style, not a single wine from New Zealand cracks The World’s Most Expensive Sauvignon Blancs list. Perhaps that’s due to the country claiming there will be a shortage, but we’d think that would drive prices up if anything.
But without further ado, here’s the list:
