If you’re still arguing with your friends about what high-end Tequila stands above the others, the 2020 World Tequila Awards have given their answer. Presented by TheDrinksReport.com, and part of the larger World Drinks Awards, which annually selects the very best in all internationally recognised styles of drinks, this year saw winners crowned in four different categories: Blanco, Reposado, Anejo, and Extra Anejo.
Best Blanco Tequila
Playa Real – Silver took home the award for Best Blanco Tequila. It was described as, “Freshly cut grass, then a more earthy root vegetable character. A characterful tequila with complexity and weight, and a satin mouthfeel which develops to a more striking finish. “
Elsewhere in the Blaco section, Próspero Tequila Blanco won a gold. Satryna Blanco, Tequila Ocho Plata, and Volcan De Mi Tierra Blanco all took home silvers. And winning bronze were Lunazul El Humoso and Cierto Tequila Private Collection – Blanco.
Best Reposado Tequila
818 – Reposado took home the award for Best Reposado Tequila. It was described as, “An earthy nose which hints at pecan pie, sweet potato and caramel. A sweet and smoky body with some oaky influence, vanilla, and more sweetness on the finish as cinnamon ice cream comes through.”
Taking home gold was Tequila Corazón – Reposado. Lunazul Reposado and Playa Real Reposado both took home silver.
Best Anejo Tequila
Tequila Corazo´n Sazerac Rye Añejo took home the award for Best Anejo Tequila. It was described as, “Sweet and bright on the nose; a hint of candy corn. An undulating, layered balance of flavours on the palate that encompasses cacao nib, agave and ripe fruit, complemented by oaky notes and a herbal, hemp-like finish. “
Gold winners were Lunazul Primero and Lunazul Anejo. Winning Silver were Tequila Corazón
Thomas H Handy Sazerac Añejo and Cierto Tequila Private Collection – Añejo. Three Anjeos received bronzes: 818 Añejo, Mi Rancho 100% Agave Premium, and Volcan De Mi Tierra Cristalino.
Best Extra Anejo Tequila
Cierto Tequila Reserve Collection – Extra Añejo took home the biggest award of the night, winning Best Extra Anejo Tequila. It was described as, “Hints of cognac blend with agave on the nose. A great balance of wood and spirit on the tongue, while maintaining a soft, smooth texture. Classy and restrained, with a soft, gentle finish. “
Cierto Tequila’s big night at 2020 World Tequila Awards wasn’t the only good news received by the brand as it was also named “Distiller Of The Year” at The 2020 San Diego International Wine & Spirits Challenge.
