Located on trendy Södermalm, Hernö Gin Bar offers cocktails and Swedish-inspired dishes perfect for cocktail lovers.
Hernö is known for being one of, if not the, world’s best gin, which makes visiting their bar in Stockholm the perfect place for gin fans. The bar opened in 2021, 10 years after the brand opened Sweden’s first gin distillery, and, unsurprisingly, focuses on gin cocktails. There is also a menu filled with Swedish-inspired flavors.
Located in Ormsaltaren on trendy Södermalm, the bar is surrounded by newly opened restaurants and historical buildings. Their cocktail menu is one of the city’s best, especially when paired with the food and knowledgeable service.
Food & Beverage Manager Linus Morgan tells us…
Please describe Hernö Gin Bar as if you’re explaining the experience of walking through the doors and ordering your first drink.
Welcome to Hernö Gin Bar, home of Swedish Gin, where gin cocktails and experiences are the name of the game.
We are a cocktail bar built around the brand Hernö Gin, and we want to showcase how to use gin in different ways and spread the ambience and feeling surrounding Hernö Gin based on the people in it. We want people to feel Hernö Gin through our service and drinks. We build our cocktail menu around the experience of flavors, divided into 4 sections. The first 2 are our signature cocktails and they are created with flavor in mind, so the first section is “the Palette” Sour, Sweet, Bitter, Salt and Umami. We try to incorporate Swedish flavors when it works but are not strict on that.
The second section of signature cocktails are based around the flavors that aren’t flavors but more texture, scent and so on. That section is called “Senses.” On this version of Senses, you will find spice, smoke, floral, heat, smooth and dry.
After that you will find classic gin cocktails, and then we finish the menu with the 2 rulers of gin cocktails, the Martini and Negroni in different variations.
How would you describe Hernö Gin Bar in a three-word text to a friend that you’re trying to convince to join you?
World’s Best Gin!
Other than Hernö Gin Bar, what else is happening in the neighborhood that you’re in?
We have a lot of newly open restaurants in the neighborhood in Freyja, Gondolen and Riche Fenix, so you will find yourself staying in the neighborhood all night long
Aside from Happy Hour, when is the best time to get to the bar?
It’s always a good time for a gin cocktail.
Describe the average drinkers that you serve?
The best thing about Hernö gin is that we do not have a typical patron, but if you like great cocktails and nice service you are welcome.
Please tell us more about your drink’s menu.
What you read on the menu is what you get, we use modern methods to amplify the flavors. But there are no secrets behind it, and we will tell you everything about the drinks in how and why we have done the drinks.
We try to have a couple of drinks with some surprise combos in how we build the flavors, but I’ll tell you more when you visit the next time.
What’s your signature drink–or your favorite drink currently on the menu–and why should I order it?
It would be our highest selling cocktail Sour, based on Hernö Swedish Capital Gin, a gin created for the bar, and only available at the bar, mixed with citric water, cloudberry, and caramelized whey.
How much do drinks cost?
Our drinks start at 178 Sek which is like 13,5 pounds.
Is there anything to eat? If so – what’s your favorite dish on the menu?
We have a fully functional kitchen, and we serve mid-sized dishes based on Swedish flavors. And my favorite is the “matjessill” which is a sandwich with pickled herring, browned butter, egg cream on a fried levain bread.
What are the distinguishing features of Hernö Gin Bar?
The service is key for us. Proper good service made for the guests.
What’s that music we hear playing on the Hernö Gin Bar stereo?
Depending on when you get in, but it will start in the early night with Soul/hip hop/pop and a little bit later when it gets dark it gets a little bit more electronic, but nothing crazy, but we try to create a nice ambiance that doesn’t take away from the experience of Hernö Gin.
