Distilled in Indiana, aged in Kentucky and bottled in Tennessee, Orphan Barrel Indigo’s Hour uses various American whiskey traditions to create a single bourbon.
Since 2013, Orphan Barrel has been bottling and sharing rare whiskeys that most spirits fans would never get a chance to get their hands on. It’s the kind of worthwhile, heartwarming endeavor that the drinks community is more than happy to support, and we’re more than thrilled to share the news about. Past releases have included Scotch from ghost distillery Port Dundas, a 14-year-old blended rye, and a vast array of other unique releases that have continued to expand the brand’s allure, even if prices can be a bit steep. Now, Orphan Barrel has unveiled the latest addition to its portfolio, Indigo’s Hour Straight Bourbon Whiskey Aged 18 Years.
Distilled in Indiana, aged in Kentucky and bottled in Tennessee, Orphan Barrel Indigo’s Hour draws inspiration from “nature’s most enchanting transitions,” says a press release. It’s crafted from a mashbill of 68% corn, 28% rye, and 4% malt and aged over 18 years in charred white oak barrels.
“Indigo’s Hour is perfect for those who appreciate the complex flavors and craft behind American-bourbon making,” said Diageo Master Blender Andrew Mackay. “Its liquid and bottle label symbolizes how the Orphan Barrel collection continues to evolve from its predecessors, making it a true collectible for those who appreciate fine spirits and rare whiskies.”
On the nose, notes of creamy vanilla arrive alongside aromas of toasted oak, baking spices and red fruit. The palate finds caramel, honey, rich vanilla, and spice, leading to a smooth finish that’s highlighted by a touch of oak.
The bottle pays homage to the whiskey’s origin story and features the Pipevine Swallowtail, the most colorful butterfly to call Indiana home; The Witches Tree, a legendary maple tree found in Louisville, Kentucky; and the the creek that sits amongst the rivers and marshlands in Cascade Hollow, Tullahoma, Tennessee, where Indigo’s Hour was bottled. The name comes from the hour between dusk and dark.
Orphan Barrel Indigo’s Hour is available at select spirits retailers nationwide with a suggested retail price of $225 per 750ml bottle.
