Macallan Wraps Bicentennial Celebrations With A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera

Macallan A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera

As the final release in its collection of 200th anniversary launches, Macallan has unveiled A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera

The Macallan has unveiled A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera. The new single malt Scotch from the Speyside whiskymaker is the last release in its A Night on Earth Series and is the final bottle to come as part of its bicentennial celebrations.

The Macallan A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera matured in a combination of European and American Sherry-seasoned oak casks. The whiskey and its flavors are said to be inspired by the year-end traditions in the home of Sherry wine, deep in the heart of Andalusia, Jerez, in southern Spain, where it is a custom to eat 12 grapes before the start of the New Year, as well as the traditional Jerez pastry, pestiños – a rich, fried dough with sugar and aniseed or honey.

On the nose, the whisky offers aromas of honey coated Pestiños, sweet raisins, cinnamon, anise, rich oak, and vibrant citrus. The palate delivers sweet pastry, white grapes, honey glazed almonds, vanilla, balanced spices and hints of fresh rosemary. The finish is sweet, vibrant, and warm.

“Jerez plays a crucial role in The Macallan’s past, but also present and future,” notes Steven Bremner, whisky maker. “As a whisky maker, having been able to tell part of that story through a whisky has been wonderfully rewarding. A combination of European and American Sherry-seasoned casks has enabled us to capture the flavours, traditions and María’s memories of New Year in Jerez de la Frontera, the home of Sherry wine.”

On the outer layer of the box, a nighttime vineyard landscape is protected by rose bushes in the lower section of the artwork. In the upper section, we see a red night sky with the moon and a shooting star. The interior of the gift box features ‘azulejos’, traditional Jerez wall tiles. On the interior inner layer golden grapes from Jerez vineyards are illustrated, representing the sherry wine that one day will season The Macallan casks. These call back to the tradition of eating grapes at the strike of midnight on New Year’s Eve.

The whisky marks the third release in the brand’s A Night on Earth series, which has included A Night On Earth In Scotland. It also wraps up the brand’s 200th anniversary celebrations, which have included a variety of special releases including the Time : Space Collection.

Bottled at 43% ABV, The Macallan A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera is priced at $140 per bottled. For more information, head over to the brand’s official website.
