The Barking Dog

The Barking Dog - Copenhagen

The Barking Dog is responsible for bringing agave spirits to Copenhagen, which means if you’re looking for mezcal, tequila, or sotol (yes we know it’s not technically agave), in the Danish capital, this is the place to be.

Agave spirits might not be the first thing to come to mind when thinking about alcohol in Copenhagen, but what The Barking Dog presupposes is… maybe it should be. This basement agaveria offers Tequilas, Mezcals, Sotols and Raicillas in all the best ways, which means you should feel free to order straight or ask them to mix up one of their excellent cocktails.

Located on a quiet street in Nørrebro, there’s nothing fussy about The Barking Dog, which is one of its best parts. Unlike many other cocktail bars in the city, there’s nothing Danish modern to be found here, instead the focus is on conversation and good drinks.

Please describe The Barking Dog as if you’re explaining the experience of walking through the doors and ordering your first drink.

A few steps will take you down to a colourful basement cocktail pub. Lights are dim. Vinyls are playing. You look around and people are smiling, chatting, sipping on their drinks, some might be on their first date. A feel of warmth crawls under your skin.

You turn to your right and lock eyes with the bartender. You take a seat at the bar, take a look at the menu but there are so many options! So you tell the bartender you’re struggling. They smile at you and tell you “I got you”.

You smile again. Feels like home.

How would you describe The Barking Dog in a three word text to a friend that you’re trying to convince to join you?

Good drinks, warm, and hospitality.

Other than The Barking Dog, what else is happening in the neighbourhood that you’re in?

The neighbourhood where we are located (nørrebro, copenhagen) is super diverse and multicultural, resulting in it being a place for everyone. Around the corner you’ll find little streets filled with other bars and restaurants and just in a 5 min walk you’ll find our liquor store Shoppen and also our sister bar Paloma, a vermuteria more for day drinking with a large selection of beers and vermuts from all around.

Aside from happy hour, when is the best time to get to the bar?

The Barking dog is a place where the atmosphere and mood changes a lot. Depends what you are looking for. If you feel like having a cosy night, or you are going on a date, or you just feel like having a chill beer after work then during the week might be more suitable for you. But if you feel like partying a bit, a bit louder music and perhaps some cheeky mezcal shots, then Fridays and Saturdays are waiting for you!

Describe the average drinkers you serve?

We’ve always considered ourselves a “neighbourhood bar”, a place where everyone can feel comfortable and not judged despite race, gender, age and all of these sorts. Most of the crowd have been going to The Barking Dog for years, others have just started coming and going. The crowd is very mixed, you never know what to expect and that’s what we love about it.

Please tell us more about your drinks menu.

Being considered a cocktail pub we have drinks of all sorts that can be palatable for almost everyone. We do have a strong passion and love for all agave spirits, so looking at our back bar you’ll find a bunch of different Tequilas, Mezcals, Sotols and Raicillas. We Like to play around with flavours, textures and techniques that make our menu so diverse. For the last menu we decided to try something different, and cut all the sucrose from our cocktails, replacing it with honey based syrups or agave based syrups. We all know that sucrose is not the best for our body and health (not that alcohol is), but we’ve discovered that playing around with honey and agave can give you an infinite number of different results. We like to change, be diverse, and in our little world to make everyone happy.

What’s your signature drink- or your favourite drink currently on the menu- and why should I order it?

My favourite drink at the moment is called Fiffi. A drink dedicated to our dear friend Fiona that works as a brand rep for all things mexican, based on Mexican rum, pear liqueur and coconut tincture. A daiquiri with an extra kick, slightly funky, a pick me up that will get the party started.

How much do drinks cost?

On average a drink costs from 109.-kr to 129.-kr

What are the distinguishing features of The Barking Dog?

Mostly the atmosphere is what makes the barking dog different from other bars. Warm toned colours all around, dim lights, Mexican tribe masks and vinyls hung on the wall, candles lighting up all the bottles in our back bar. Makes you feel in a living room, warm and cosy, sofas all around and of course, you’ll always get a big smile from the bartenders.

What’s the music we hear playing on The Barking Dog stereo?

Depending on the mood of the night you will hear all sorts. On a quiet night we might play for you soul, blues, reggae..  And when the mood starts picking up and people feel a bit more frisky then funk, R&B and some hip hop will get your legs going!
