Compass Box Secrets Of Smoke unveils the rarely discussed sweeter side of peaty Scotch via a blend of three whiskies
Compass Box has unveiled a new limited-edition whisky that gives a taste into the sweetness that sits behind peaty whisky, Secrets Of Smoke. The sweet and smoky offering from the blended whiskymaker showcases the brand’s ability to showcase every flavor on the whisky palate.
To create Compass Box Secrets Of Smoke, the brand blended Caol Ila whisky finished in Palo Cortado Sherry-seasoned butts, Peat Monster finished in second-fill red wine casks, and Laphroaig finished in Marsala barriques. Together, the whiskies. The combination helps reveal the fruity, creamy, and floral characteristics seldom associated with peated malts, also shining a light on its sweeter side..
On the nose, the whisky is sweet and rich with toasted marshmallow, honey, and buttery pears leading to notes of caramel and coastal smokiness underneath. The palate is oily and spicy with pear, peach and melon, which grows citrusy, before a long, chocolaty and peaty finish.
“Our limited editions allow us to spread our creative wings and concoct one-off expressions with unique recipes,” says Compass Box Director of Whiskymaking James Saxon. “With Secrets of Smoke, we wanted to build on the results of some of our cask experiments and enhance the unexpected sweetness of peated malts.”
Compass Box Secrets of Smoke features a mysterious dark label with holographic foils representing the sweet flavors of the blend. Each glimpse at the bottle “uncovers another layer of visual enigmas, making each Secrets of Smoke experience full of surprises,” says the brand.
Secrets of Smoke is made to pair with a variety of foods, including fresh cherries that add a jamminess to the whisky, sharp blue cheese, and Saucisson sausage.
Bottled at 52% ABV and limited to just 9,792 bottles worldwide, the whisky will be available for a suggested retail price of $165. For more information, head over to the brand’s official website.
