Glengoyne Unveils 50 Year Old Whisky, Its Oldest Ever Release

Glengoyne 50 Year Old

Glengoyne has unveiled a 50 Year Old Whisky. The new single malt is the oldest Scotch to be released by the Highland distillery. To make the release even sweeter, the brand is offering one bottle for free via ballot.

To enter the competition, those interested will need a minimum of four people who they plan on sharing the whisky with to sign up through the online ballot. From there, they will need to describe the perfect moment for savoring the 50-year-old Whisky together in 2021. Entrants have until December 14 to submit their moments.

Bottled at 45.8% ABV, the Glengoyne 50 Year Old Whisky offers notes of Demerara sugar, walnuts, sweet pipe tobacco, red apples and cloves on the nose. The palate delivers a “rich, spicy oak burst, then molasses, treacle and liquorice take centre stage,” followed by a long finish.

“When we first filled hand-selected oak casks with our sweet, fruity, new make spirit back in the late 1960s, The Beatles were only just breaking up, Richard Nixon was US president, and Sesame Street debuted on television,” said Robbie Hughes, master distiller at Glengoyne. “A lot has changed while we’ve been waiting patiently for this unique release.

“At Glengoyne we believe that patience is always rewarded. This year we’ve all had to sacrifice spending time with our loved ones or delay celebrations. That’s why we want to make these moments extra special in 2021 with a memorable whisky that, after waiting so long for just the right moment, is truly ready to be opened and savoured.”

The new expression is packaged in a crystal decanter that features an engraved goose emblem to represent the geese that migrate to the Glen every winter. Each solid oak and gold presentation box comes with a 25ml sample of the 50-year-old and an individually hand-numbered book signed by Hughes. The Whisky joins the Highland distillery’s Fine and Rare range, alongside the new 30-year-old expression and a 25-year-old bottling.

Only 150 bottles of Glengoyne 50 Year Old are set to be made available globally and will be released across key markets, the distillery shop and website next week. The Whisky will be priced at £22,500 ($30,000 USD).

Earlier this month, Glengoyne released a new 500-piece jigsaw puzzle and two time-inspired gifts sets.
