Finnish whisky brand Kyro teamed up with Planteray rum to create the world’s first whisky to be finished inside a sauna
Finnish distillery Kyro has unveiled the world’s first sauna-finished whisky with the launch of its Sauna Stories series. Melding Finnish sauna culture with experimentation, the expression honors the distillery’s 10 year anniversary and commitment to innovating production methods.
The limited edition malted rye whisky matured in Planteray rum casks constructed specifically for the sauna. Barrels were tenderly heated with excess heat from the distillation process, with internal temperatures reaching up to 122°F. The process allows the whisky to “sweat out any disharmony”, pulling distinct compounds from the barrel and harmonizing flavors. The final product is described by Kyrö’s distiller as full of character, with creamy vanilla, Jamaican fruits, brown sugar, and rye spice on the palette.
“I think it’s only natural that we make whisky in a way that reflects the culture we reside in,” says Head distiller Kalle Valkonen. “And the fact that Finnish whisky history is nearly non-existent positions us as trailblazers.” The Sauna Stories #1 is the first release of whiskies that will experience the sauna-finishing process.
Founder and marketing director Mikko Koskinen asserted ““Our goal is to bring people together over rye spirits, and we let this guide our production and communication. We need to make spirits that are interesting for connoisseurs, delicious for beginners and inspiring for all.”
Bottled at 50.8% ABV, the Kyro Sauna Stories Series #1 is limited to just 1,908 bottles with a suggested retail price of $165. For more information, head over to the brand’s official website.
