The World’s 50 Best Bars has announced its list of the top cocktail joints on the planet for 2024 and Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City topped the list
Following a week of events in Madrid, Spain, The World’s 50 Best has awarded Mexico City’s Handshake Speakeasy as the World’s Best Bar 2024. This was the 16th edition of the annual ceremony celebrating the finest cocktail bars.
Located in the Colonia Juárez neighbourhood, Handshake Speakeasy is hidden behind a secret door and stocked with an array of vintage spirits. Bar Director Eric Van Beek is known for melding tradition and innovation, elevating classic cocktails through cutting-edge technique developed in the on-site lab, and revolutionizing familiar recipes with unexpected flavors.
Hong Kong’s Bar Leone (No.2), Barcelona’s Sips (No.3), London’s Tayēr + Elementary (No.4) and Singapore’s Jigger & Pony (No.5) rounded out the rest of the Top 5. Check out the full list below:

Other bars picking up awards this year include Buenos Aires’ Tres Monos, named The Best Bar In South America; Seoul’s Zest winning the sustainability award; Oslo’s Himkok was awarded the best design award; Paris’ Cambridge Public House was awarded as the Highest Climber; Melbourne’s Caretaker’s Cottage took home two awards (The Art Of Hospitality Award & The Best Bar In Australasia); NYC’s Superbueno won the New Opening trophy; and Dubai’s Mimi Kakushi won The Best Bar In The Middle East & Africa.
Earlier this year, Handshake Speakeasy took home the award for North America’s Best Bar. Barcelona’s Sips took home the 2023 award for the World’s Best Bar. Sips has since also opened Glass by Sips inside Hotel Urban in Madrid’s Barrio de las Letras.
