Fort Collins-based Old Elk Distillery has finished a Colorado wheat whiskey in French Limousine Cognac Casks
Old Elk Distillery has unveiled its first wheat whiskey finished in French Limousine Cognac casks. The new bottling joins the Fort Collins, Colorado-based brand’s Cask Finish Series, which currently features a Barbados Rum Finish Rye Whiskey, a Cognac Cask Finished Bourbon, and a Port Cask Finished Bourbon.
“I’m excited about the newest addition to the Cask Finish Series with our Cognac Cask Finish Wheat Whiskey, which puts a new twist on our award-winning Straight Wheat Whiskey,” says Melinda Maddox, Master Blender at Old Elk Distillery. “The combination of the French Limousine Cognac Casks with our Straight Wheat Whiskey really play well together.”
Made from a mash bill of 95 percent soft red winter wheat and five percent malted barley, Old Elk Cognac Cask Finish Straight Wheat Whiskey is first aged for six years, then matures for an additional 6 months to a year in French Limousine Cognac Casks. The nose offers aromas of rich apricot, sandalwood, caramel and candied orange. The palate delivers honeycomb, orange blossom, and caramel, leading to a long, rich finish.
