Situated in bustling Norrmalm, Röda Huset focuses on locality while making some of Stockhom’s best and most unique cocktails and dishes.
Located in the heart of Stockholm along the buzzing streets of Norrmalm, Röda Huset (aka Red House) is best known for its use of local ingredients. Scandinavian flavors are mixed with spirits from near and far to create an ever-evolving menu of seasonal, unique, and beautiful cocktails. The knowledge of provincial produce can be seen throughout the entire menu, while co-owner and head bartender Hampus Thunholm uses his contacts with native producers to make pours different from anywhere else in town..
As much a restaurant as a bar, dishes like Rooster wing & Fermented plum serve to make Röda Huset one of Sweden’s most unique establishments for eating and drinking. Add the local design elements, Swedish music, and stellar views, and it’s easy to understand how the space quickly garnered a reputation as one of the city’s best, no matter if you come for food or drink. There’s also pizza!
General Manager Björn Kjellberg tells us…
Please describe Röda Huset as if you’re explaining the experience of walking through the doors and ordering your first drink.
It all starts in the Swedish north, where Hampus Thunholm is from. We want to offer the northern calmness and tranquility in the most hectic and pulsating piece of Stockholm, and even Sweden maybe. A slice of coming home to, or stepping into the world of, Hampus Thunholm. Our little simultaneous shard of city vibe, the comfort of being at home and nature’s serenity if you like.
How would you describe Röda Huset in a three-word text to a friend that you’re trying to convince to join you?
It’s fakking amazing!
Other than Röda Huset, what else is happening in the neighborhood that you’re in?
Well, quite a lot to be honest! Considering only a few years back, our street and extended neighborhood was known as, not only the dead center of Stockholm, but also as the street and area of vice. These last years, the city has decided to take it back and clean it up a bit, so more and more nice restaurants are popping up as well as other cultural and architectural initiatives. Being the center of it all, of course there is still a very organic pulse by the people going on. Anything from civil rights demonstrations to the daily commuters stressing by and newly arrived tourists from all over entering Stockholm soil for the first time.
Aside from Happy Hour, when is the best time to get to the bar?
For some pulse and more action, early nights. For a more chill and relaxed feeling, later evenings. But at large, whenever we’re open!
Describe the average drinkers that you serve?
Really a mixed bag of international cocktail-, bar- and food tourists, domestic aficionados, businesspeople who just want a good drink or some nice food, youngsters, hipsters, influencers, artists, industry peers, the rich and famous. An eclectic mix to be honest. Part of the strength of Röda Huset.
Please tell us more about your drinks menu.
Local Scandinavian flavors seasoned with the spirit best suited to enhance the flavor of the main produce. The menu is a 16 strong everchanging map. We never change the entire menu, but rather swap a few gems here and there depending on season, availability and mood.
What’s your signature drink–or your favorite drink currently on the menu–and why should I order it?
Kolagräs (or Sweet vernal grass with good crème) is by far our top seller and our crest. A combination of good cream from the island Gotland flavored with sweet vernal grass, Absolut Elyx, Galliano and our in-house Happī sour mix based on locally grown Granny smith apples. It was even awarded ‘signature Cocktail of the Year’ at the latest Bartenders’ Choice Awards.
You should order it firstly because it’s delicious, secondly to claim you too had one and lastly to take a picture of Sweden’s most instagramed ice cube…
How much do drinks cost?
180SEK (about 16EUR)
Is there anything to eat? If so – what’s your favorite dish on the menu?
There is a lot to eat! We are just as much a restaurant as a bar. Some come for the drinks and stay for the food, and some come for the food and stay for the drinks. Win-Win.
Easy, Rooster wing & Fermented plum! It might even be the best thing we ever served at Röda Huset if you ask us. Simply, a deboned rooster wing filled with mousseline with a glaze of fermented plums.
What are the distinguishing features of Röda Huset?
The local seasonality of the cocktails, loads of knowledge of the produce and the techniques used and all the growers and producers we work with. Then, also the characterful venue itself with all the local design elements and details, that also just happens to carry one of Stockholm’s greatest views. That and the service. Without service the rest ain’t shit.
What’s that music we hear playing on the Röda Huset stereo?
Mainly Swedish music. Everything from Swedish artists to Swedish produced or played by Swedish musicians. But just as our eclectic mix of guests, this gives a rather lifeful mix of music ranging from old to new, from hip-hop to house, from to pop to old Swedish funk and rock, timeless classics and the Hives.
