The Semi-Tropic

The Semi-Tropic

The Semi-Tropic has been one of Echo Park’s hippest spaces since the day it opened as an all-day stop for coffee, easy bites, and the best all-day wine and beer happy hour in LA a half decade ago. Things have changed since then (they’ve had a full liquor license for a number of years now, but gone are the 9-to-5 drinks deals), but the bar remains one of the neighborhood’s trendiest. There’s a tiki punk vibe that pairs well with the inventive cocktails and lush interior as well as the chaos that comes when trying to order that second round.

What’s the crowd like?
Probably a little too hip for anyone’s good, but it’s great for people watching. The bartenders know their stuff and the staff is as nice as they come, though you’ll have to be on your toes to get another round once seated.

What am I drinking?
Modern plays on classic cocktails that tend to lean tropical and colorful and fun wines made for the modern enthusiast. We opt for the Kingston Negroni or a Pet Nat.

Is there anything to eat?
Yep. From popcorn and olives to wings and hummus to a wedge salad, chicken enchiladas, and even flan, The Semi-Tropic has a bit of everything and it’s all pretty good.

When should I get here?
It gets busy, so come early if you’re looking for a seat and to order a few drinks. If you’re here for the people watching and don’t mind a bit of a line, feel free to come later and enjoy the eye candy.

Why am I here?
To enjoy the death rattle of hipster punk in Echo Park with some good drinks and possibly even better tunes.
