Danish distillery Stauning has launched Stauning Rye Whisky Sherry Cask Finish, its first US exclusive
Stauning has unveiled their first U.S. exclusive, limited-edition Stauning Rye Whisky Sherry Cask Finish. This new expression is a twist on the Danish distillery’s classic Rye Whisky, which is finished in hand-crafted Pedro Ximenez PX and Palo Cortado Sherry casks sourced from Jerez, Spain.
Floor malted, distilled, and matured at the Denmark distillery, the Sherry Cask Finish begins with a rye and barley mash distilled twice through direct-fire copper pot stills, then matured in charred virgin American white oak. The expression is then finished in Sherry casks, which add rich, vibrant, and fruity notes to the whisky’s classic rye flavors.
“This limited release is a testament to our passion for innovation while honoring the centuries-old traditions of Danish Whisky-making” stated co-founder of Stauning, Lasse Vesterby. “By finishing our rye in these hand-selected Sherry Casks, we’ve created a whisky that beautifully balances the rich history of Danish grains with the vibrancy of the Spanish casks.”
On the nose, the whisky offers aromas of toffee, salted caramel, and cinnamon. The palate delivers Seville orange, black tea, and cardamon, follwed by a finish with notes of ripe figs, tobacco, and demerara sugar.
Bottled at a cask strength of 50.5% ABV, the Stauning Rye Whisky Sherry Cask Finish features a retail price of $75 per bottle. Only 800 total bottles will be available for purchase in the U.S. directly from the brand’s official website.
In April, Stauning launched HØST–which translates to ‘harvest’ in Danish. The whisky honors the natural beauty of the West Denmark landscape and the season that provides the grains essential to their Danish whiskies.
