Thunderbolt

Thunderbolt

Currently Los Angeles’ top drinking destination, as far as the World’s 50 Best Bars is concerned, Thunderbolt is known for its inventive cocktails, assortment of Madeira wines, and Southern-style food. Located at the intersections of Historic Filipinotown, Echo Park, and DTLA, the space has helped turn Temple into a place to be after dark. Dark green walls, concrete floors, and metal seats contribute to the space’s laid back, easygoing nature–and the frozen cocktail option doesn’t hurt either.

What’s the crowd like?
A mix of local regulars and those who have come to see what all of the fuss is about. The one thing in common about the visitors is that they love their drinks, without taking things too pretentiously. A good amount of bar & restaurant industry workers stream through the doors, so expect high energy and low tolerance for rudeness.

What am I drinking?
It depends on the night, but we’d recommend trying at least a glass of Madeira, if you’ve never had it, and a variety if you have. Still, the cocktails are why people stream through the door, and for good reason, and the most famous is the canned and carbonated Tropipop. If you’re looking for a twist on something more traditional, try the P-Town Boxing Club.

Is there anything to eat?
Yes. An all day menu of Southern delights keeps imbibers satiated, think buttermilk biscuits, a fried green tomato sandwich, pimento cheese, and more.

When should I get here?
If you’re looking for an electric crowd, aim to arrive on Friday or Saturday in the later hours. If you’re looking for a quieter experience or to become a regular, there’s nothing like a biscuit and a cocktail before meeting your “light eater” friends in Silver Lake or Echo Park.

Why am I here?
You’re here for some of LA’s best cocktails without the snobbery.
