The Tobermory 21-Year-Old And Ledaig 18-Year-Old are heading to the US for the first time
Tobermory Distillery is bringing two new single malts to the United States: Tobermory 21 Year Old and Ledaig 18 Year Old. Each bottle offers a unique taste of the Isle of Mull distillery’s rich whisky-making heritage.
Both the Tobermory 21-Year-Old and Ledaig 18-Year-Old whiskies reflect the distillery’s focuses. Half of the year Tobermory Distillery crafts unpeated Tobermory and the other half they produce peated Ledaig whisky in its Hebridean distillery.
Tobermory 21-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
(46.3% ALC/VOL, 92.6 Proof, 700 ML) – MSRP $280.99
The newest member of the distillery’s unpeated core range, the 21-year-old whisky has been finished in Oloroso sherry casks. This expression was produced in small batches and distilled into whisky refill casks in 1999, before being transferred into Oloroso sherry casks in 2015. Bottled at 46.3% ABV, Tobermory 21 is available at select retailers nationwide and on ReserveBar.com.
On the nose, it offers aromas of marzipan, hazelnuts, toffee, and treacle. The palate delivers cherry wood, brown sugar, caramelized pineapples, and sticky toffee, leading to a fresh, light, and sweet finish.
“Our Tobermory 21-Year-Old is a true reflection of the artistry behind our whisky-making. The long maturation in American oak, followed by the sherry finish, allows the spirit to develop a harmony of flavors that’s both bold and refined,” says Juliann Fernandez, master blender at Tobermory Distillery. “It’s a whisky that captures the essence of the Island of Mull—natural, complex, and full of character— and one we are excited American whisky enthusiasts will soon be able to enjoy.”
Ledaig 18-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
(46.3% ALC/VOL, 92.6 Proof, 700 ML) – MSRP $176.99
Heavily-peated (30 – 40ppm phenol), robust, and with sweet smoke and earthy notes. This whisky first matured for 16 years in ex-bourbon casks before being finished for two years in sherry casks, giving the whisky its sweet and fruity notes. Bottled at 46.3% ABV, the 18 is part of the Ledaig core range. It is available at select retailers nationwide and for presale this month on ReserveBar.com.
The nose offers a rich, fruity sherried smokiness, a lovely balance of phenols, seaweed, dried chilli flakes, spicy black pepper, and hints of sweet oakiness. On the palate, rich, sherried, herbal smoky flavors intermingle with orange peel, coffee, a touch of sea salt, tobacco, and white pepper. The finish delivers more smoke, with a hint of licorice and sea spray.
“The Ledaig 18-Year-Old is a whisky that celebrates our peat-fired heritage,” adds Fernandez. “We’ve allowed the peat smoke to develop into something truly special over 18 years, enhancing it with a sherry cask finish to create a rich, smoky whisky that stands out in the world of peated malts.”
